“nostalgia for unity” - An exhibition by Korakrit Arunanondchai - At Bangkok Kunsthalle

The exhibit description:

“There is a strong similarity between how one recalls a dream, a memory and a film. Within this overlap is where Korakrit Arunanondchai forms his filmic compositions.”

How very Wong Kar Wai and Bi Gan.

“In this exhibition, negative space is the primary medium for the artist.”

The exhibit is an empty industrial space, an empty stone cavern.

Ambient music plays softly, sounding like the sounds of a forgotten religion. Yellow light drifts from above. Participants gaze upwards. There is a sense of awe and the sacred.

It felt like something from Dune, Arrival, or Bladerunner 2049.

One of the strongest elements of the exhibition was how it engaged all the senses. Not just something to be seen, but something to also be experienced (ambient sounds, the feel of the rocky floor, the sense of space).

It made us wonder, if we designed clothes not just for how they looked but also for how they felt - how would they be different?

It makes us think of the clothes in Dune, for example Lady Jessica as she lands on Arrakis. Her clothes don't just look beautiful, it's as if you can feel the silk folding and flowing against the skin.

Perhaps that's why we've always liked cuts that drape, something to ponder for future collections.

Yours truly,
